Happy Thanksgiving Hitmen–& a Few More

Greeting Hitmen,

I hope you are all well and this message finds you in preparation of your post-t6urkey dinner, tryptophan induced coma!  I wanted to take a brief moment to remind you all that there will NOT be a December MAFIA meeting this year.  Rather, we want all of you to enjoy your time with your families and consider taking some time to help those among us who are less fortunate. We will return in January with some exciting news regarding MAFIA in 2011.

I’m sure you all know that this time of year is hard for many folks whether they are divorced, estranged, without loved ones or in need because of limited finances or work circumstances etc.  My guess is that some of you may even fall in to this category to some degree.  I just wanted to take a moment to encourage you to share it with God, and possibly one of your MAFIA brothers.  It isn’t always an easy thing having so much responsibility on our shoulders and the Lord knows we could all use a friend.

I also want to ask each of you to keep John and Debbie Craft in your prayers.  Debbie had bypass surgery a week ago and while she is doing quite well post-op, the road to recovery after such invasive surgery is long.  Join me in lifting them in prayer.

Lastly, I want to share with each of you a need that has been passed along to me from Libby Moix, the single mothers ministry sponsor.  Libby has advised that one of her volunteers, and a single mother herself, is in need of some “honey Do’s” after the Thanksgiving holiday.  Specifically, she needs some help with:

  • Placing a new light fixture put up in stairway...high ceiling will require a tall ladder
  • Fixing two broken cabinets, door facing needs to be glued
  • Hanging three coat hooks on a wall

If after your turkey day feast you have it on your heart to help out this sister, please give me a call.  Under the circumstances, we would like to have two men go together to help out in getting these tasks accomplished.  To volunteer, please call my cell at 501/944-0562 or email me at lribich@asigllc.com.

[Ca]dre Home Sponsors Invitation

Greetings Hitmen,

It's that time of year again to sign up to be a Home Sponsor (HS) for [Ca]dre Academy students.  [Ca]dre is a wonderful, exciting and fulfilling ministry, of which you can be a part by providing a home for a student during the year.  What an opportunity to be a part of missions right in the comfort of your own home!  These guys work so hard for the church all year, doing so much for our different ministries and are such a blessing to everyone who has the opportunity to work with them.  But the true blessing comes to those who have the privilege of housing these amazing kids.  I know many of you have been prayerfully considering being a Home Sponsor for this next term and now is the time to make that commitment.  Orientation/move-in is usually around Labor Day weekend.

If you've already signed up to be a HS, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!  If not, there are applications at the Welcome Center or you can get one online.  They only require a bed to rest their tired bodies, some food (and you don't have to always prepare it) and a "family" while in the program.  We need many homes this Fall and it would be great to have an abundance of homes to offer this year.  Check out cadre academy on FB under "info" to gain insight into this amazing program.  There is also info at www.newlifechurch.tv under "students".

From a HS viewpoint, we housed two students last year for the first time and we were the ones blessed! There's wisdom to gain from these young people, and you just never know how God can and will use you to impact this generation.  Trust me, you don't want to miss out.

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: Fear

Fear

v. to be anxious about a particular event or situation

I fear not being good enough. I'm not one of those depressive people that tries to hog everyone's attention and focus on my flaws, but sometimes I really do find myself struggling with the question of "am I good enough.” It's not until I take the focus off of myself and zoom in on Christ that I can truly start feeling better about myself.

The bible talks a lot about fear. My all time favorite verse that deals with fear can be found in Psalm 27. This verse asks the simple question "whom shall I fear". When we look back at scriptures like Romans 8:31 and Jeremiah 17:7, we can be that much more at peace with the fact that as long as we are walking with Christ, we have nothing to fear!

Here's a great quote for you: “Each time we face our fear, we gain strength, courage, and confidence in the doing.” I absolutely hate trying to do something I'm afraid to do. But once I do them, more often than not I find I like doing them, and tend to want to do them again. Like when I first started leading worship in Driven. I was terrified to sing and play in front of all those people for the first time. But now that I've done it...well... just try to stop me!

On a separate note, this week’s MAFIA meeting was great.  Ken Barnes nailed it out of the park as he shared about the miracle of his boys birth and their survival being three (3) months premature.  Then, to be visited by both the Midtown Church Men’s MAFIA (headed by Sam Williams) and the Apostle Peter, well suffice to say we were truly enlightened.  Don forget about the MAFIA night a Dickey Stephen’s cheering on the Travelers next Monday.  We will leave the church parking lot at 5:30 PM or meet at the stadium at 6:00 PM, come hungry and ready for a great night of fellowship!

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: Anger is Contagious!

Greetings Hitmen,

Okay, so here’s the deal – if the plan works as envisioned, you are all receiving this on Friday this week. Don’t worry, we didn’t forget to send this out earlier in the week, we just wanted to add some extra emphasis on this week’s topic prior to you going home to spend the weekend with your families and friends. As I am sure you already gathered by the title, this week I am talking about anger. Actually, I am somewhat of an expert in this area, though I am certainly not proud of it. I have been refocusing my study of scripture as of late on the topic of anger and I realize that this is an area that many, many men (and women) confront almost daily.

Anger is a dangerous pitfall that threatens all of us in one way or another. I have come to know that the intensity of this emotion must be dealt with from the inside out. Taking our eyes off Christ threatens our ability to focus on the good in life and can let anger creep in subtlety and quickly. Those of us burning with rage or some other intense driving force within us may think we can control it on our own accord; however, we eventually and invariably lose control. We need to see the truth that we are unable to control such forces on our own, confess this to God and those people on our “board of directors” whom we trust our accountability to. Then ask for God’s powerful help in controlling these feelings. And though I said I am an expert on the topic, I never said I am a perfect and/or godly example – but the Bible is full of good and Godly illustrations. Therefore I wanted to share with you all the various scriptures that I have found to review this week so you will have remembrance of what the Word says about anger:

1. Anger is contagious: “Keep away from angry, short-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul” (Proverbs 22:24-25)

2. Anger is dangerous: [Jesus] “You have heard that the Law of Moses says, ‘Do not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ But I say, if you are angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the high council. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.” (Matthew 5:21-22)

3. Hot tempers aren’t cool: “A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.” (Proverbs 12:16)

4. Anger has consequences: “Those who are short-tempered do foolish things, and schemers are hated… Those who control their anger have great understanding; those with a hasty temper will make mistakes.” And, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger… a hothead starts fights, a cool-tempered person tries to stop them.” (Proverbs 14:17,29 & 15:1,18)

5. Anger is best controlled: “Don’t sin by letting anger gain control over you. Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a mighty foothold to the Devil.” And, “People with good sense restrain their anger; they earn esteem by overlooking wrongs.” (Ephesians 4:26-27 & Proverbs 19:11)

This weekend start asking God to help you control your emotions from the inside out. And remember, as a good friend of mine says in the closing signature of every one of his emails, “Act justly, love mercifully, and walk humbly...”

Luke Ribich

URGENT NEED – VBS THIS WEEK – CRITICAL HIT OPPORTUNITY

Greetings Hitmen,

We hope you dad’s out there had a great Independence Day celebration with your family.  We have a CRITICAL HIT NEED for you to get engaged in this week supporting the NLC GLR Campus VBS event for school aged children.

We NEED for 15-20 guys to aid in the break-down process of all VBS equipment (stack chairs, deflate the inflatable bouncy toys, etc..) the night of Friday, July 9th around 8-10:00 PM after the last service is over. We simply have to stack everything by the main entrance so the Conway campus can come get everything for their VBS. Estimated to take 1-1.5 hours.

Usually all of the VBS workers do all of this but they will have already worked all week at their regular jobs, plus each night from 5-9 @ VBS so I thought it would be a great way to help out the children's department.

If you are able to assist in any way, please contact Craig Brzezinski ASAP a. You can email him at: udaman1371@mac.com or call him on his cell at 501/680-7753.

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: Submission, the key to Leadership!?

Greeting Hitmen,

For those of you whom have known me for more than a few minutes, you know how deeply important the history of my military service is to me. In fact, were it not for the lessons learned in the Corps, I do not know if I would have had the courage to make a full commitment to Jesus, a decision that ran counter to the policy of past employers and even some of my relatives. Recently I had the occasion to have one of our MAFIA brothers visit me in my office and he noticed on my desk, positioned alongside my Holy Bible, was a copy of a book I reference often, even before coming to know the Lord Jesus Christ, the book is called “Leading Marines.”

Leading Marines, isn’t really a book I explained it is United States Marine Corps Fleet Marine Force Memo #1-0 (FMFM 1-0). It is a detailed explanation and model of leadership. Now, I want to be clear that the scriptures are the definitive source of both moral instruction and example by virtue of the source, wisdom and lives of Christ and the other saints; however, I often need to be reminded in modern day language what it takes to be a leader, and what that leadership looks like in application. In those times I often fall upon the leadership principles and examples found in FMFM 1-0.

Since our friend’s visit in my office, I was reading a passage of comments the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Major General John A. Lejeune, uttered in description of Sergeant Major John H. Quick, a Metal of Honor recipient: “Perhaps of all the Marines I ever knew, Quick approached more nearly the perfect type of noncommissioned officer. A calm, forceful, intelligent, loyal and courageous man he was. I never knew him to use profane language, and yet he exacted and obtained prompt and explicit obedience from all persons subject to his orders.” While I read these words I was moved to tears through conviction by the Holy Spirit because I know that I don’t always exercise leadership in the manner of Christ or my beloved Marine Corps tradition.

The tradition of leadership education in the Marines uniquely mirrors that of Christ in that it has often been described as “leading by example.” In fact, leadership, in the long run, depends upon the example set by the leader (or the leaders leader), not only as a warfighter, but also as a Christ follower, citizen and human being. Being a Christian gives us no special relief from our call to lead by example, only a venue to accept the consequences and grace that comes our way as a result of our failings. In fact, because we call ourselves Christians, the effect of our example is emphasized and magnified a hundred-fold, particularly among our secular and non-believer friends. Being leaders by setting the example, in our homes, communities, workplace, socially, and within the body of Christ is far more important in the realm of principalities than in any other activity – military or civilian, because it is eternal. In fact, more often than not, the best way to lead others is to submit and be led ourselves!

This weeks reminder is straight out of Hebrews 13-17: “Obey your spiritual leaders and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they know they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this joyfully and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: Don’t Worry Be Happy

Greeting Hitmen,

It is so easy to get irritated, frustrated or jealous and even angry at the people, environments and circumstances in our life. Like many of you, I have to work on this daily within certain relationships, most of my own making. One thing that helps to not only calm me but bring the confidence of peace in a difficult situation is to fall upon God’s Word. It always amazes me how a good translation of the Bible and a good topical index can give me a “map through the minefields” of life and love.

Recently I have embarked upon a journey to draw myself closer to God, specifically by gaining grace and focus in my life. While reading night before last, I turned to the 37th Psalm. Now I must have read this passage of scripture no less than 10 or 12 times in my life and drawn from it that I should just “deal with it,” whatever the “it” is. The Psalm speaks about the ills of anger and rage, the follies of the strongholds brought about by our sin nature, and the importance of patience in conquering difficult situations. But I don’t think I’ve ever noticed in previous readings that it starts out by saying, “Don’t worry about the wicked.” Does this mean that I shouldn’t worry about those people who seem to be getting away with doing wrong things? Yes! The Word goes on to describe that their day in the sun is short, that their moment of glory will soon be over. What I, and all of us men who follow Christ, should do is involve ourselves in things that have lasting value by faithfully serving God and helping the people around us. God wants us to develop a close personal relationship with Him; and, be determined to serve Him in everything we do. Then in God’s perfect timing, all will see that God’s way is right!

How do we do that? What does this look like? Get out of the boat or off the sidelines and help out. That is why HITS (Helping in the Spirit) are so important to the MAFIA team. It is how we demonstrate not only to God, who already knows our hearts, but to others in need of encouragement and support that God places the needs of others in our hearts – because He loves them and wants to bless them, to draw close to them. If you think about it, how did the Lord rescue you from wickedness? Where will your heart be the next time you need to be saved?

Luke Ribich

HIT OPPORTUNITIES: Posted June 21, 2010

Greetings Hitmen,

We hope you dad’s out there had a great Father’s Day celebration with your children.  Here are a few HIT opportunities for you to get engaged in over the next few weeks.

First, we share somewhat of a 2 part request regarding NLC-GLR VBS July 6-9th:

The main request is the need for 10-20 guys to aid in the break-down process of all VBS equipment (stack chairs, deflate the inflatable bouncy toys, etc..) the night of Friday, July 9th around 8-8:30 after the last service is over.

The second request is for male volunteers to help with VBS the week of July 6-9. At the volunteer meeting last week we were very outnumbered. They expect anywhere from 300-400 kids so the more adults we have the better it will be from a management standpoint.

If you are Interested in volunteering please email Brad Seagraves ASAP as he is in the Children's department and needs to order shirts and complete the background check. You can email him at: brad.seagraves@yahoo.com.

Hit Opportunities: Posted 15 June 2010

Attention all Hitmen:

I hope you all are well and that this message finds you in good spirits. I wanted to take a moment to share with you all the following needs and see if we can get you HITMEN involved in helping our dear Brothers and Sisters in their needs.

First off, and most urgently, Jeff Wilson has had a flooding in his home. His back is still recovering from some surgery earlier this year and he could use help quickly pulling up carpet and moving heavy furniture as he assesses the damage. If any of you are out of work today and able to render some support, please contact Jeff as soon as possible at 501/ 960-0649.

Also, Ms. Crystal Farley is moving out of her first floor apartment into a one story house on Saturday, July 24th.  She could really use our help and asked the MAFIA’s help in supporting her move. If you are available on Saturday, July 24th, we look forward to blessing Ms. Farley with your help.

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: God’s love is great, even when we aren’t!

Greetings Hitmen,

Good morning Hitmen, or should I say Saints! I recall one of Pastor Rick’s comments from this weekend’s sermon as I say that. He shared, “The work of the church is to equip the saints for the ministry.” He’s right; we are all called to be in “ministry” with one another… most of the time in our daily lives we call this friendship! It is a great message.

Today I want to share with you all about the wretched condition we all have in common one way or another. I was reading in Romans 5 last evening about how faith brings joy. I often turn to Romans 5 when I am in need of encouragement and lifting. Although it seems almost a backward way to describe the condition of joy, the author (Paul) uses several phrases to describe our painful position in the beginning of the passage. “We are utterly helpless” (5:6); we were “sinners” (5:6, 8); and we were God’s “enemies” (5:10). It was precisely when we were in that condition that God decided to solve our sin problem for us. He loved us so much that he sent His Son to die on the cross to set us free from the power of sin. We cannot be any worse than the way Paul describes us there, so God’s love and acceptance of us can never be negated by our failures. With a Savior like that, we can confidently surrender our lives to Him.

So those of you who are reading between the lines of this week’s message are probably asking yourselves “why does Brother Luke need encouragement?” The fact is we are all fighting daily a battle against the enemy by our own strongholds. Some, if not most, days we are successful, sometimes we are even able to spread the light of Christ beyond our own lives and positively impact the lives of others. Sometimes however, we fall… whether that be a course word to our spouse, a negative gesture to another driver or being too harsh in our corrections of others. As Christians we are called to be the light of the world, this means not being hurtful to others. This weekend I had an opportunity to exercise grace, and I didn’t. Although I am convicted by my actions, I am not defeated, today I surrender these flaws to Him, and once again pick-up my cross and follow Jesus! Will you? Remember, God loves us not because we humans are so loveable, but because He is love.

MAFIA Reminder of the week: A Godly man can achieve much.

Greetings Hitmen,

I’ve been re-reading 1 Chronicles over the last several days when I asked myself, “What is the point of this book of the Bible?” The whole text retells the story of King David’s reign, showing God’s purpose in the history of Israel.  Okay, got that, but what does that mean to me; and, more importantly, how can I apply this knowledge to my own life?  Then it dawned on me, parts of this book (1 Chronicles) read like a thriller war novel.  Yet, underneath the action is one recurring truth: Trusting God is the key to a successful life.  Further, when we stop trusting and seeking God bad things, very bad things, tend to transpire.

Case in point: Chapter 9 starts out by detailing the the events of returning exiles.  The whole chapter contains a record of the Jews who returned to Judah after the Babylonian exile, which lasted 70 years. Yet, it focuses on the abiding truth that God made certain promises to their ancestors – our ancestors. Though they had gone through hard times, albeit self inflicted, God’s promises were still valid for them.  In Scripture, God gives numerous promises to His people.  In Christ, God’s promises are for all of us to embrace, no matter what we have done or suffered in the past.  Ultimately, the returning Jews were able to rebuild Judah by their faith and submission to God’s will.  You can be certain that it was no small task to rebuild an entire city, however with God on your side all things are possible.

So here’s something worth reading, and memorizing, this week from 1 Chron 28:9, “…get to know the God of your ancestors. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and with a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and understands and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.”

Have a great week and know that the MAFIA team look forward to seeing you Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM in the church parking lot as we set out for a night at Dickey Stephens Park, supporting the Arkansas Travelers and growing in our relationships with our brothers and children.  Also, let us know how we can be in prayer for you as you seek to amplify your faith in Him.  Iron sharpens Iron!

Luke Ribich

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: Life is easier to manage with friends…

Greetings Hitmen,

I was reading in the book of Daniel this week and happened upon a passage that is foundational to the principles of the entire MAFIA ministry.  In short, we are strongest when we stand together that when we stand alone – especially when we are in trouble or being attacked!

Here’s the set up, King Nebuchadnezzar has had a dream that is really bothering him.  As a result he summoned all his various counselors, including Daniel.  The king told them that if they did not reveal to him the meaning of this disturbing dream, he would have them torn to shreds!  (Sounds like a great boss – and one I used to work for)

In verses 2:16-23 we see that Daniel gives us a model for action when we are in trouble.  Daniel needed help so he gathered his godly friends and prayed.  God heard their prayers and granted their request.  Afterward, Daniel praised God for His blessings.

Praying to others is essential to our spiritual growth.  It is easy to forget that God is in control and that we are left to accomplish everything on our own.  Thanking God when He grants our requests also helps us to maintain a healthy focus on Him.  One reason that prayer is so important is that is the only physical medium by which we can grow in our relationship and communication with God – and if you recall, that is all he wants, a personal relationship with each and every one of us.

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: Its not just a process, its a journey too!

Greetings Hitmen,

Well its been a couple of weeks since John Craft and I had the privilege to share a little of our personal experiences with you and expand upon the great teaching presented in April Pastor Adam Roth.  I’m sure there are several of you who have had this topic on you minds ever since, we are finding that this is a message that resonates with lots and lots of men – even those whom by all outward appearances “got it all together.”

Many of you noticed that we didn't end the discussion with a nice and tidy closing, all wrapped up with a bow.  And while there was some effort made to share with you some general points about how you can heal form the Father Wound it is important to reiterate that this is a deeply personal process.  That said, I’ll caution you that you don’t want to try to rush this.  For those of you who are thinking, “I don’t have time to deal with this right now in my life,” or “This may be for other guys but not me,” (which is what I said for a long time) I want to advise you that those thoughts are from the Enemy.  Fight those thoughts and emotions.  You must understand that, as we discussed, this is a battle for your heart.

So understanding that this is a journey, John, the MAFIA Leadership Team and I wanted to be sure to share with you a “Map through the Minefield” of sorts.  Here are a some general principles that will aid you in your personal quest to freedom and release from the father wound.

  1. Surrender the wound.  We encourage you to go into those places and circumstances where you were most hurt and find Christ in those situations.
  2. Renounce those vows and agreements that you have made over the years that have led you to dismiss, minimize or accept the hurts placed upon you.  They only lead you into performance mentality, self loathing, apathy, rage or worse.
  3. If you haven’t already, invite God into your life, to live at the center of your heart and guide your actions and reactions.
  4. Grieve the wounds.  This isn’t weakness, this is how pain leaves our bodies (and souls).  Express the pain and loss, shed the tears or whatever that your pain deserves – this reflects a transparency and honesty between you and God.
  5. Allow God to love you and encourage you by building your relationship with him through prayer and meditation over the His Word.  There are a variety of bible study and fellow ship options around New Life Church that will help you mature in your relationship with Christ.
  6. Remember that you dad wasn’t born to hurt you… someone wounded him first!  Maybe this was his father and he just did what he knew.  It is important for you that you love him and actively forgive him.

We love doing life with each of you and we are praying for each of you.  We have received your comments from the blog and are actively calling on God the Father to lift you up. keep your prayer requests coming, blog feedback is a great way interact with our team. Its also a good way to reach out to us outside the “fishbowl” of our regularly scheduled MAFIA meetings.  Until next week…

Next Month… MAFIA Goes to Dickey Stephens Park!

Greetings Hitmen,

We hope you are well and that this message finds you all in good spirits.  We wanted to help get you out ahead of the news that the June NLC MAFIA Meeting is going to Dickey Stephens Park to cheer on the Arkansas Travelers baseball team.

This quarter we’ve been hitting a heavy topic, father wounds, and we felt it was important to remind each of you of the importance of spending quality time with your fathers (or children) and work on building good memories too.  What better way than to spend an evening at the ball park.  So here’s the scoop:

  • When: Wednesday, June 9th
  • Where: Meet at NLC GLR Campus no later than 5:30 pm (or meet us at the park gate)
  • Who: Men After Faith Integrity & Action (MAFIA) Hitmen and their children and fathers – be sure to bring your dad or child!
  • What: $7.50 at the gate (NLC is covering 1/2 of entry and food).  This includes entry ticket and all-you-can-eat hamburgers, hot dogs and drinks.
  • Why: Please RSVP no later than June 1st via email to craft@craftveach.com, lribich@asigllc.com or by phone to 501/851-1408. Hurry and don’t forget, space is limited to the first 100 to respond.

We’re looking forward to a great time and fellowship with all you.

MAFIA Reminder of the Week: The Greatest Men Serve the Greatest God!

Greetings Hitmen,

I have found that if you ask a group of Christian men to name their favorite Bible character, chances are a healthy percentage will acknowledge Daniel.  It’s not hard to see why.

Much like Joseph, who lived much earlier, Daniel rose from teen captivity to wield enormous power and influence in the greatest empire of his time.  Over a remarkable 70-year career, Daniel stayed true to his Lord despite colossal pressures to switch spiritual allegiances.  His enemies and friends alike took note of his impeccable character and devotion to the One True God.

Daniel constantly called attention to the sovereignty and eternal rule of God.  From the beginning of his career, to the end, he staked both his life and his reputation on God’s prominence. Captivated by the majesty and glory of God, Daniel felt no need to promote himself or massage his public image.

In acknowledgement of his commitment, God used Daniel to show the world what lay in its future.  Even Jesus Christ built his most famous prophetic utterance around a prediction of Daniel (Matthew 24:15).  It is important to note however that Daniel did not always understand the things God showed him, but nonetheless he never lost sight of God’s promise to him “As for you, go your way until the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days, you will rise again to receive the inheritance set aside for you.” (Daniel 12:13).

I hope you are encouraged this week to stand fast on the promise of salvation given to you through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Luke Ribich

MAFIA Reminder of the Week

Greetings Hitmen,

Welcome to our new project for keeping you encouraged and updated about the latest things happening with the NLC Men's MAFIA.

Each week, beginning this week, you can expect to receive a brief e-mail from us highlighting a piece of God's Word in a way that speaks directly to the heart of man. We won't be watering it down or regurgitating it; rather, we are being intentional about our messages so that you are actively challenged and engaged as you consider what the Lord has in mind just for you. We promise to keep our messages short and to the point, and to present them with an awareness and applicability that resonates with your masculine spirit. As always, we encourage your feedback and discussion. Therefore you are invited to share your comments with us either at our monthly MAFIA meetings, online at http://nlcmafia.blogspot.com/ or on our Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/Mafia.GLR. We also encourage you to become a Facebook fan of the MAFIA at http://www.facebook.com/. Now for this week's reminder...

We men are proud creatures, manifested from God's own image. That said, we are not God himself and thus cannot experience spiritual renewal and transformation from God without true humility. Pride stands in the way of our ability to deal with our painful problems and sins. If we cannot, or are unwilling to, admit our problems and failures, then there can be no real and lasting cure for us. When we humble ourselves before God, we may need to mourn and grieve over our mistakes and losses. This can lead to spiritual growth. As we do this, we will experience the kid of comfort that only God can offer.

This week check out what God has to say about this by reading Matthew 5:3-5 and 2 Corinthians 1:3-5. Let us know your thoughts!

NLC MAFIA – Helps Academics Plus Charter School

Greetings Hitmen,

As some of you may know the weather this past weekend put the bust on a scheduled day of service that was to be held at Maumelle’s Academics Plus Charter School.  Understanding that a cancelation of this magnitude can leave any community activity short handed, the MAFIA Leadership team has decided that this delay presents a perfect opportunity for our Hitmen participate in a local missions outreach to help out a worthy local cause.

Spring 2010 Cross-Ministry HIT Opportunities Revealed

Greeting HITMEN,

Spring is finally here and everywhere we look we are finding things to do with and for people. Expanding our opportunities to serve the local area with our HITS is the NLC Arkansas Dream Center, which is really starting to take place. Serving at the Dream Center is an awesome adventure which allows each of us to be a part of God’s work as we participate and watch our community be transformed right before our very eyes.

With the busy weekend just getting underway, I wanted to just give you guys a shout about a few quick things.

  • First is the Christian Endeavors for Outreach (C.E.O.), led by Jeff & Melissa Allison. Jeff & Melissa are spearheading much of the local mission outreach, this includes several of the Arkansas Dream Center projects. Their next meeting will be Saturday, April 24th, at the Allison house (127 Scenic Valley Loop in Maumelle) at 6:30 PM. You won't want to miss it because they will be talking about a couple of cool projects coming up on May.
  • Second is NLC’s Adopt-a-Highway plan. The Arkansas Highway Dept has approved the church’s application to adopt the mile that begins at Counts Massie Rd (in front of the old church bldg on Maumelle Blvd.) and heads toward the current church bldg. We should have a sign up before too long. So plan on getting actively involved in keeping Arkansas, and our local community, beautiful.

Remember to wear your MAFIA shirts as you participate in these HIT opportunities as it encourages our brothers in Christ to get off the sidelines and into the game! Besides, the more hands involved in a project, the lighter the work, and greater the joy and fellowship.  If you don’t have a MAFIA shirt be sure to get one at next month’s meeting on May 13th at 6:30 PM (GLR Campus).

I want to encourage each of you to give give these service options a try and put next Saturdays C.E.O. meeting on your calendar. Together the ministries of NLC are going to make this Spring something people will be talking about for a long time.

Luke Ribich

Father Wounds - Adam Roth hits it straight on!

Wow, Pastor Adam Roth nailed it! The stronghold of our earthly father's wounds are what most men are challenged by daily. Am I good enough? Do I measure up? Does my dad approve of what I've become? Is he proud of who I am? Does he love me? How or who wounded his heart? What is the effect on my family, my relationships? What do I see, when God sees me? So many questions and they start with our relationships with our natural fathers. Thank you Adam for sharing your heart and wisdom with us all.

This whole quarter the NLC GLR Men's MAFIA is looking to God's Word for answers and healing. Next month John Craft himself will share his own story about the challenges of fatherhood and our own Luke Ribich will reflect on his childhood and how those experiences have manifest in his adult life. Then these might warriors will share God's strategy for finding release and healing from these wounds. I highly recommend every man attend the May MAFIA meeting.

What are MAFIA “HITS?”

H.I.T.S = Helping in the Spirit

“…but among you it should be quite different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must become your slave. For even I, the Son of Man, came here not to be served but to serve others, and to give my life as a ransom for many." Matthew 20:26-28 (NLT)

The New Life Church Men's MAFIA (Men After Faith, Integrity & Action) is a Christian fellowship of brothers-in-Christ dedicated to supporting each another, the NLC congregation and the community-at-large through service outreach (H.I.T.S. – Helping in the Spirit).  Our HITS team is continually receiving requests from our local church and area representatives of individual needs, which we hope to eliminate.  These diverse needs include serving the elderly, widows, families and others whom have a sincere and usually urgent need for encouragement and direct assistance.  The diversity of our HITS range from prayerful intercession to those more physical in nature and have included hospital visits, yard work, relocation, building handicap access fixtures, and other manual labor tasks that these individuals may not be able to easily perform.  These HITS complete our MAFIA vision to be men of faith, integrity and ACTION.  As shown above, Matthew 20:26-28 yields evidence of the importance of our service to others as a foundational block of God’s will to be manifest in our masculinity.  His will is further edified and rewarded by the many relationships that have been built among team members while being in service to others.  We invite all of you to visit our next MAFIA meeting on April 13, 2010 at the New Life Church GLR campus at 6:30 PM to join our HITS team.  See you there!

Luke Ribich

Hit Request – Sat. 10 APR 2010 @ 0900

Greetings Hitmen,

I am putting the word out about a hit request that has come in from one of our beloved widows, Ms. Kelly Hoffman.  Many of you knew or remember Tim Hoffman who list his battle with brain cancer last year.  Kelly is preparing to sponsor a singles ministry event at her home this month and could really use some help moving some furniture and video game cabinets upstairs to her game room.

I won’t kid any of you, these game cabinets are quite heavy!  That said, I really need to get the support of 4 Hitmen on this mission.  She has a good heavy duty dolly at the house.  I would like to get some of the younger men to jump in on this one.  We can meet at the Kroger parking lot in Maumelle at about 0830 on Saturday.  I do not expect this hit to take more than an hour or so to finish.

If you are available, please email me at lribich@swbell.net or call me on my cell at 501/944-0562 and let me know you will be there.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Luke Ribich

Fwd: Hit requests - Please circulate

Gentlemen,

From time to time we are asked to help in all sorts of situations and address all kinds of needs. Some we feel better about than others. We currently have two requests for help that I can say I feel strongly that we should respond to:

  • There will be a lady's event at our church on Sunday evening February 28th that will probably have 1800 to 2000 women attend. We have been asked to help with parking, child care, ushering and a variety of other areas in order to allow as many women as want to attend the function rather than working in these capacities. Please let Luke Ribich know if you will be able to help that night.
  • Mary Heber is an elderly widow who was one of the original members of this campus and has help with the children for years. Mary lives in an older area of Little Rock that is not as nice as it once was. She would like to have an outdoor flood light installed that would have a movement sensor to come on when she gets home in order to feel safer as she enters her house. Mary is willing to pay for the apparatus but is unable to do the installation herself. Please let Luke know if this is something you can help with – some wiring may be involved.

Guys, I always appreciate your willingness to help with needs as they arise.

Thank you all,

John "The Godfather" Craft

Attention all Hitmen

Good evening Hitmen,

We have had a request for a move this Saturday by Jeanine Salzman.   She is a single mother of 10 year old twins that is moving to a new apartment in her complex.  She has MS and can really use our help.  We would like to gather 6-8 men and so that it would only take 2-3 hours. Logistically speaking we require a couple pickup trucks and/or trailer to support the move. If you are able to help, please email me at lribich@swbell.net. We are going to shoot for a 0800 kick off Saturday morning.

MAFIA – Let’s Help Carla Wallace

Greetings Hitmen,

I hope all of you are well and of to a great New Year! Look, I know this is last minute, and its partly my fault for sure – but we need to get some help together for one of our NLC single mothers.  Ms. Carla Wallace is moving this weekend from her home at 29 Ozark Dr., Maumelle to a nearby apartment complex and she could really use our help.

Her plans are to move this weekend on Saturday, 16 January 2010, beginning at 10:00 AM.  This being a local move I don’t anticipate it taking too long if we can get a pretty good sized group together.

If you have a heart to help Carla and her sons, or some additional time this Saturday, we’d love to see you out there.  If you are interested, please drop me an email at lribich@swbell.net and I’ll give you directions and ay other details I have at that time.  I’d really like to see about five (5) of our Hitmen get in on helping Carla and her sons.  I know that she and they boys will greatly appreciate it and you will enjoy not only being of service but being in fellowship with other selfless men of NLC.

In His Service,

Luke Ribich

Plan “B” – A Message from John Craft

Guys,

Due to the church’s period of prayer and fasting meeting being at 6:30 each evening, I am planning to modify the MAFIA meeting this week. We will not have a meal and I am asking the MAFIA guys (including you) to attend the church meeting with your MAFIA shirts on. I think it will be good for us as men to show support for this activity. Pastor Bezet will pray over the MAFIA guys there and will speak directly to the MAFIA at another time this year – probably February, schedule permitting. Please help me spread the word and let’s try to have a strong showing on Tuesday night to support the whole body of Christ.

Thanks,

John Craft

Rick Bezet to Speak at next MAFIA Meeting

Greetings Hitmen,

I hope you all are well and that your Christmas & New Year holidays were safe, restful and above all filled with FOOTBALL! OK, I know some of you tend more towards the outdoors, technology and other holiday diversions like food; however, whatever you did I sincerely hope it was enjoyable and that you remembered that Jesus Christ is the reason for the Season.

Speaking of football, the results are in!  the First Annual NLC MAFIA Fantasy Football Leagues have finished the season.  And the concluding weeks were filled with surprise upsets and great games. Our own Matt Rush will be presenting all the league results as well some of his own brand of color commentary.

We heard that some of you were slacking in attendance because you were tired of hearing about the Razorbacks.  So, we’ve got another SEC leader coming to share his heart with us.  That’s right guys, this month our own founding pastor Rick Bezet will be giving a message to our group.  Although we don’t yet know what he’s planning on sharing, its a safe bet it won’t involve being feminized by the church.  In fact it will likely to challenge your heart and head. John and the team cannot wait – as long as he doesn’t wear purple.

FOOD!  What NLC ministry does food better than the MAFIA?  That’s right guys NOBODY.  And let’s give it up to Craig Brzezinski and his supporting cast for all the hard work they do to keep the man-food coming.  This month we will be having

Now the details:

  • When: Tuesday, January 12, 2010 @ 6:30 PM
  • Where: Family Room – NLC GLR Campus
  • Who: Any man under (18 also included – Unless Pastor Harry Speaks)
  • Why: Masculine Fellowship, Encouragement and Accountability

Now here’s a great message from a couple of solid guys we recently found that some of you might not have seen. Enjoy:
